Madrid – April 14th, 2012

His Majesty King Juan Carlos I has undergone surgery this morning following a fall in which he suffered a fracture in three fragments of his right hip. The 74-year-old monarch was on a private visit to Botswana; the Palace said the King’s fall in Botswana was “accidental” but gave no further details regarding his visit.

The King was taken to the San Jose Hospital in Madrid last night and had surgery on his hip this morning. The palace said: “King Juan Carlos had suffered a fracture of his right hip in three pieces. A reconstruction of the parts of the fracture was carried out and a hip implant was installed.”

This accident comes only days after the King’s eldest grandson, Don Felipe Juan de Marichalar, was admitted to hospital following a shooting accident in Soria, where he shot himself in the foot.

Read more about the King’s health here.

March 31, 2010: H.M. King Mihai I of Romania creates his grandson H.R.H. Prince Nicholas of Romania
On March 31st, 2010, Mr Nicholas de Roumanie Medforth-Mills celebrated his 25th birthday and received a birthday gift which very few others in the world can claim: his grandfather, King Mihai (or King Michael) created him a Prince of Romania with the style His Royal Highness. The decision was made in 2005 when King Mihai created the Fundamental Rules of the Royal Family of Romania to ensure the Romanian Throne (defunct since 1947) remained with King Mihai’s descendants (he has five daughters and no sons). The Fundamental Rules, which took effect in 2007, placed Prince Nicholas in third position in the line of succession to the defunct Romanian throne. He is the only son of H.R.H. Princess Elena of Romania and her first husband, the late Dr Leslie Robin Medforth-Mills.

March 11, 2011: Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
At 2:46pm local time on Friday March 11th, a magnitute nine earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan, sending shockwaves through the country for several minutes before tsnuami warnings were issued. A tsunami several metres high struck the coastal town of Sendai a short time later, destroying all in its path and travelling kilometres inland. The devestation was followed by fears of a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima I and II Nuclear Power Plants nearby, which suffered damage in the earthquake and tsunami causing the cooling system to fail and cease circulating coolant to keep temperatures at an appropriate level. Over 15,000 were killed in the disaster, almost 27,000 were injured and over 3,000 are still missing. Whole towns in coastal regions were destroyed. T.I.M. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko toured evacuation centres and the hardest hit regions in the days following the disaster.

Queen Silvia in Germany

  March 19, 2012 at 9:09 pm by

Queen Silvia was in western Germany over the weekend, to officially open a centre for dementia sufferers and to accept an award for her charity work.

On Friday March 16th, the Queen was in Bottorp, where she opened a centre to be used as a meeting place for people suffering from the first stages of dementia. The centre has been funded by the Malteser International group, and utilises the philosophy of the Silviahemmet (Silvia Home), which aims to provide support for dementia sufferers to allow them to be able to control their own lives.

The Queen, who founded the Silviahemmet in 1996 after witnessing her mother’s own struggle with dementia, said that she was “pleased and proud” to be able to open the first meeting place for dementia sufferers run by Malteser. Inside the centre, the Queen spoke with some of the first people to take advantage of the facility.

The following day, Queen Silvia attended the Steiger Awards at the Bochum Centennial Hall. She was presented with the Steiger Award in the charity division for her work to reduce the exploitation of children worldwide, which she highlighted in her speech: “250 million children must work every day. One percent of them, 2.5 million, below ground,” in reference to the Steiger Awards’ values, traditionally represented by miners – responsibility, honesty, openness and hard work.

The Steiger Awards, which translates to ‘The Miner’, presents the recipients with a statuette featuring a piece of coal inside a glass dome. Other recipients this year were German Federal President Horst Köhler, fashion designer Wolfgang Joop, German actress Christine Neubauer and US musician Lou Reed, who did not attend the ceremony due to illness.

Belgium’s King Albert II and Queen Paola were present yesterday at the Melsbroek Military Airport, where they were part of an official delegation which saw the departure of the parents of the students involved in the Swiss bus crash on Tuesday.

King-AlbertII232x290.jpg

The King and Queen were greeted upon their arrival by the Belgian Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo, and Defence Minister Pieter De Crem. The group then went inside the airport, away from the media’s glare, to console the families of the twenty-two children and six adults who were killed in the bus crash.

Prime Minister Di Rupo called the day “a black day for all of Belgium,” while King Albert said his thought and prayers were with the victims’ families. The Prime Minister joined the families on the government-issued aircraft for the journey to Switzerland, where the families were taken to the morgue to identify their children and then also to the scene of the accident.

Late Tuesday, a coach carrying fifty-five passengers was returning to Belgium following a school skiing trip to Switzerland. While travelling through the Sierre Tunnel on Switzerland’s A9 Motorway, the coach crashed into a wall, crushing the front end of the bus. Rescuers worked for hours to free the survivors of the crash, who were taken to hospitals in Sion, Bern and Lausanne for surgery and treatment. Twenty-four of the passengers survived the crash. Eight of the survivors have already returned home to Belgium.

Tomorrow has been declared a day of national mourning in Belgium.

The British Royal Family today marked Commonwealth Day, which is held each year on the second Monday of March to celebrate the British Commonwealth.

Queen Elizabeth II led the celebration at the multi-faith service held at Westminster Abbey. She was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Countess of Wessex and the Duke of Gloucester. The royal family all appeared to be in high spirits, with smiles and laughs a plenty upon arrival and throughout.

Performances at the service were given by a Canadian and a South African, in the spirit of Commonwealth inclusion and this year’s theme – Connecting Cultures.

View the full gallery at Zimbio

The Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall both chose bright shades for their ensembles – fuschia and purple, respectively. Their outfits were completed by matching hats from Angela Kelly, the Queen’s personal couturier, and Philip Treacy. The Countess of Wessex went the opposite route and wore a silk coat in taupe over  a black dress. Her hat was the most flamboyant of the three – featuring both a sky-high vertical brim and a headpiece of feathers.

Earlier in the day, the Queen’s annual Commonwealth Day address was released by Buckingham Palace.

In the speech, Queen Elizabeth spoke of the way today’s technology allows members of the Commonwealth to connect with each other – “to see, hear and enter into the experience of people in communities and circumstances far removed from our own.” She also encouraged the members of the Commonwealth to “share and strengthen” the citizenship of the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Day began as Empire Day in 1898, implemented in Canadian schools. It moved to the United Kingdom in 1904, with local fireworks and bonfires. It became Commonwealth Day in 1958 to signify the new era following post-colonial times.

Message from HM Queen Elizabeth II

Day, 12 March

HRH Queen Elizabeth

One of the great benefits of today’s technology-based world is the range of opportunities it offers to understand and appreciate how others live: we can see, hear and enter into the experience of people in communities and circumstances far removed from our own.

A remarkable insight we gain from such windows on the world is that, however different outward appearances may be, we share a great deal in common.

Our circumstances and surroundings may vary enormously, for example in the food we eat and the clothes we wear, but we share one humanity, and this draws us all together. The joys of celebration and sympathy of sadness may be expressed differently but they are felt in the same way the world over.

How we express our identities reveals both a rich diversity and many common threads. Through the creative genius of artists – whether they be writers, actors, film-makers, dancers or musicians – we can see both the range of our cultures and the elements of our shared humanity.

“Connecting Cultures”, our Commonwealth theme this year, encourages us to consider the special opportunities we have, as members of this unique gathering of nations, to celebrate an extraordinary cultural tapestry that reflects our many individual and collective identities. The Commonwealth treasures and respects this wealth of diversity.

Connecting cultures is more, however, than observing others and the ways in which they express themselves. This year, our Commonwealth focus seeks to explore how we can share and strengthen the bond of Commonwealth citizenship we already enjoy by using our cultural connections to help bring us even closer together, as family and friends across the globe.

To support this theme, a special song has been composed for the Commonwealth, ‘Stronger as One’. There are any number of ways in which that single piece of music alone can be played or sung anywhere in the Commonwealth. And by sharing the same music with our own personal interpretations and contributions, the wonderful human attribute of imagination is nourished, and we gain insights of understanding and appreciation of others.

The Commonwealth offers a pathway for this greater understanding and the opportunity to expand upon our shared experiences in a wider world. A world in which paths to mutual respect and common cause may also be explored and which can draw us together, stronger and better than before.

Princess Charlène Opens Grace Kelly Exhibition

  March 11, 2012 at 9:28 am

by

Princess Charlène of Monaco has been in Australia this week, to officially open the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery in Victoria.

Charlene-Monaco-Opens-Grace-Kelly-tEqK5eGSrmDl-120x120.jpg

Arriving in Melbourne earlier this week, the Princess spent some down-time out of the public eye which included a private dinner with the Lady Mayoress of Melbourne at the Melbourne Town Hall on March 9th.

The same day, Princess Charlène paid a visit to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), where she was given a brief tour and got to chat with some little ones and their parents who were having a swim class. It is not the first time that the Princess has visited MSAC – she competed in the 2002 FINA World Cup Swim meet which was held at MSAC that December, in which she won the 100m Women’s Backstroke.charlene-420x0-copie-1.jpg

Then yesterday, it was time for Charlène to make the hour and a half car ride north to Bendigo for the purpose of her visit – the opening of the exhibition on her late mother-in-law. Wearing a custom-made dress by an Australian designer (more about the Princess’ fashions later today), Princess Charlène was greeted by a crowd of over 700 upon arrival at the Bendigo Art Gallery.

grace-20kelly-200x0.jpg

Accompanied by Victorian Premier Ted Ballieau and Prince Albert II’s first cousin, John Kelly (nephew of Princess Grace), the Princess toured the exhibition and delivered a speech in which she praised Princess Grace’s sense of style, “Her beautiful style was a reflection of her natural elegance, taste and character…it remains an inspiration to all across generations and culture.”

VIDEO: Princess Charlène’s Speech at the Opening of the Grace Kelly: Style Icon Exhibition

The exhibition, which opened today March 11th, will run until June 17th.

***

I was able to head up to Bendigo and view the Grace Kelly exhibition today. The Bendigo Art Gallery is a charming little gallery a short walk away from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, and on the same street as the Queen Elizabeth Ova, just outside the main city centre.

The first segment of the exhibition focuses on Grace’s acting career (Grace – The Actress) – dresses from High Society, The Swan (the white lace dress which was loaned from the V&A Museum in London specifically for the Bendigo exhibition) and Rear Window all feature alongside movie stills. The seafoam evening gown and coat (love!) worn to the 1954 Academy Awards takes pride of place next to the Princess’ own Oscar. The dress and coat are displayed on two seperate mannequins, unlike in Canada, and the dress is angled to allow the viewer to see the ties which make up the back of the gown – exquisite work by Edith Head.

Moving into the second segment, Grace – The Bride, the centre of the first room focuses on the ‘shirtwaist dress’ (a word used heavily throughout the descriptions around the exhibition) Grace wore when her engagement to Prince Rainier III was announced, accompanied by one of her original Hermès Kelly bags. A series of photographs from the couple’s first meeting in France lines the wall, with a replica of the black floral dress in the display opposite.

Also in this room are several of the outfits the bride-to-be wore in the lead-up to her wedding, beginning with the navy blue dress and coat worn when arriving in Monaco. My first reaction to the arrival dress was, “Where’s the hat?!” Outloud. Yes, the gigantic white hat which kept the Monaquese from seeing their future Princess’ face is not part of the exhibition. Jess was sad. The fellow next to me joked the hat was back at his house.

Then, it’s on to the centrepiece of the exhibition – the gown. Grace’s wedding gown. Because of age and fragility, a replica of the wedding gown is shown in the exhibition (the real gown is tucked away safely in Philadelphia museum’s storage facility). Seeing the gown in person is so much better than seeing it in photographs – the intricate detailing of the lace packs more of a punch when you are less than a metre away, seperated by glass. Personally, while I find Grace’s wedding gown one of the best royal wedding gowns ever, if I had to make a choice between the gown worn for the religious ceremony and the suit worn for the civil ceremony, the civil ceremony would win, hands down, every time. While everyone else went straight for the gown, I was drawn like a magnet to the civil ceremony outfit. The skirt, the jacket, the little hat. Grace Kelly-becomes-Princess Grace to a T. It’s probably a good thing that all the pieces were behind glass, otherwise I may have not been able to restrain myself from attempting to vacate the premises with the civil outfit non-subtley tucked into my purse.

This segment ends with a  20-odd minute long video, showing the three stages of Grace’s life featured in the exhibition – actress, bride, princess. You’ve got silent clips for her movies, her short Oscar acceptance speech, the engagement and wedding ceremonies, and Prince Albert and Princesses Caroline and Stephanie peeling potatoes on a yacht.

The final segment is again split in two and showcases the style of Princess Grace. Outfits from Balenciaga and Dior are present, respresenting both the Princess’ daytime wear and her evening wear. Gowns she wore in the 1970s are distinguishable immediately, if not for their brighter colours, then most definately by the frill that runs as a hem around the bottom. This segment also has the jewel case – mostly produced by Cartier, there is earrings, a necklace, ring and braclet. Throw in a diamond and pearl diadem and a gold, diamond and ruby Monaquese coat of arms brooch and you’ve got a complete set. Oddly enough, Grace was never seen wearing the diadem on show in the exhibition, so I question why it was included in a Grace exhibition. But hey, who’s going to complain too much when you’ve got sparkly things laid out in front of you?

Other gowns include the purple tafetta, typically ’80s number the Princess wore in London when she met with the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer – which looks much better in real life than in photographs, but still not one of my favourites by a long shot; the white and black panelled gown worn for a photoshoot, which looks much better in photographs than in person; the Palace stairs gown – which I disliked up close as it there is too much ‘in-your-face’ going on with the skirt, the tulle and the flower; and a pale blue chiffon maternity gown. A special display is set aside for the Princess’ hats, gloves, shoes, sunglasses and handbags.

The exhibition ends with gigantic proportions – I almost died when I rounded the corner of the last display and saw the gigantic puff ball that is the pink Centenary Ball evening gown Grace wore in 1966. How Grace was able to walk, sit, stand in that gown is beyond me – I don’t doubt that six people could fit under its skirt!

Overall, the exhibition is a lovely showcase of the style that made Grace, Grace. The simple, similarly cut outfits worn in the lead-up to her marriage highlight the 1950s essence which evokes memories of Grace Kelly. The progression of the exhibition allows you to see the transformation she went through as she got more comfortable in her role as Princess of Monaco, allowing herself to experiment with different designs and colours – bolder as we got into the 1960s and 1970s and into the Parisian haute couture.

Grace Kelly: Style Icon? Without a doubt. And very few others, from the past and in the present, will ever be able to create such a style and image which says some much, with so little and has the overwhelming ability to have people of different generations, cultures and social groups each pull back to the same point to describe who was Grace Kelly. Elegant. Classic. Unique. Grace.

Well-received: A casual Prince Harry was cheered by crowds as he arrived on Harbour Island in The Bahamas

As was announced earlier, the British Royal Family will be undertaking a series of official visits this year to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Currently, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Prince Harry are in the Caribbean, visiting various Commonwealth countries in the region.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex’s trip began on February 21st, in St Lucia. The couple spent two days on the small island, visiting schools and meeting with officials. It was then on to Barbados, where Edward and Sophie paid a visit to the Parliament building in Bridgetown, and the University of the West Indies on February 23rd. During the university visit, Edward and Sophie were given the chance to speak with the university’s student leaders. The following day, Prince Edward presented The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Golden Standard Awards to several youths at a reception at Barbados’s Goverment House. While in Barbados, a visit to a Jewish synagogue and a state dinner hosted by the Governor-General were also on the agenda. On to St Vincent and the Grenadines on February 25th, and the Earl was charged with opening the Jubilee Garden in Port Elizabeth.

In Grenada on February 27th, the Earl and Countess unveiled a plaque at the Botanic Gardens in St David to mark the Jubilee visit, before being guests of honour at a state lunch held on Spice Island by the Governon-General of Grenada, Sir Carlyle Glean. For the two following days, the duo were in Trinidad and Tobago. Edward and Sophie attended a luncheon at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s Port. The Earl then visited the Belmont Boys School, while the Countess visited the Princess Elizabeth Centre for Physically Handicapped Children. Prince Edward presented some more Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold Awards to students while in the Port of Spain. Also on February 29th, the Earl and Countess were present at a military parade.

On March 3rd, the Earl and Countess were welcomed by the Governor-General of St Kitts and Nevis, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, in Port Zante. Following an official welcoming ceremony, Edward and Sophie presided over the renaming ceremony of the St Kitts National Capital Park, now called the Royal Basseterre Valley Park. Cultural performances and hospital visits filled the remainder of the day.

Prince Harry began his trip in Belize last Friday, where he was greeted at the airport by the Governor-General of Belize, before heading to the Governor-General’s residence. Harry attended a street party in the evening, where he mixed with locals and enjoyed samples of local rum and beer, before joining in on the daning. In a short speech, he said “the Queen of Belize” sent her warmest wishes and was sorry she could not come herself – therefore leaving everyone stuck with him. The following day, March 3rd, the Prince toured the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, which were abandoned by its citizens around AD 950-1000. In the afternoon, Prince Harry launched a Jubilee Canoe on the Mopan River and met with World War II veterans at the Price Barracks. He then headed over to the Bahamas in the evening.

On March 4th, Prince Harry began his visit to the Bahamas with a church service at the Christ Church Cathedral in Nassau decked out in his dashing No. 1 Tropical Dress of The Blues and Royals. Later, he toured an art exhibition in Rawson Square, where he was presented with a portrait of himself. A walkabout allowed Harry to meet locals. A visit to the Royal Bahamian Defence Force concluded the day’s events. Then yesterday, Harry visited the National Athletics Stadium where he attended a youth rally.

Prince Harry will continue on to Jamiaca and Brazil in the coming days.
